Need Your Mantel in a Particular Wood Species?

Most of the Mantels in our pre-designed collection can be made in your choice of one of 7 different wood species giving you greater design flexibility and allowing you to match your homes unique décor or the existing woodwork or flooring.

Choose from the Following Mantel Materials:

POPLAR MANTELS

Poplar is usually creamy-white to gray in color, sometimes pale brown or pinkish-brown. The grain is straight and can be woolly with a fine and even texture. Poplar is our standard for mantels that will be pained, but we can also use select Poplar as a cost effective stain-grade option.   

PINE MANTELS

Pine is a lightweight wood, characterized by a straight grain and a fine, even texture. While knots are prevalent in the wood, the knots tend to be small and tight, giving the wood the signature rustic look that pine is so well known for. Pine is also dimensionally stable and durable. making it a viable choice for a fireplace mantel.

RED OAK MANTELS

Red Oak is a wood that is known for being very hard and strong. However, given its density, it is actually fairly easy to work. Red Oak has a coarse texture and turns and carves well. It is also characterized by having excellent sanding and finishing properties, and great stability. These features make Red Oak an excellent choice for a fireplace mantel.

MAPLE MANTELS

Maple is characterized as dense, and light in color. Maple is a fine textured and close grained wood that does not require filling and making it a great choice for a fireplace mantel.

CHERRY MANTELS

Cherry wood is moderately heavy, hard, and strong, and it also machines and sands to glass-like smoothness. Because of this, Cherry finishes beautifully making it a great choice for a fireplace mantel. The heartwood in Cherry is red in color, and the sapwood is light pink. Mantels made of Cherry generally consist of approximately 25% sapwood and 75% heartwood.

MAHOGANY MANTELS

Mahogany is characterized as having straight to interlocked grain and a medium coarse texture. The wood varies slightly in color from a light reddish brown to a medium red. Not only one of the most valuable timbers in Africa, this species is also one of the foremost cabinet woods in the world and a popular choice for fireplace mantels.

WALNUT MANTELS

Walnut is quite durable and strong. Its coloration can be light to chocolate brown, and may contain burls, butts, and curls. The sapwood is usually white in color, and may be as high as 25%. When a deep, dark rich color as desired, Walnut is a great choice for fireplace mantels.

Although you’ll find plenty of Mantels available for purchase on the internet you will also find that almost all are only available in 1 or 2 ‘standard’ sizes and that the designs can’t be altered in any way.  Most of these ‘stock’ mantels are also only offered in 1 type of wood species.
